About Mute Video

You just recorded a great clip, but the sound is unusable — wind across the mic, a TV droning in the background, copyrighted music, or a take you would rather re-voice. Muting the video hands you back a clean, silent picture you can drop straight into an edit and cover with a fresh voice-over or a licensed track. That is exactly what this tool does: it removes the entire audio track and returns the same video, untouched, in seconds.

How to remove audio from a video

  1. Drag your video onto the box above (or click to browse) — MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV or AVI.
  2. Click Mute Video.
  3. Download the silent video. It is the same format and quality as the file you uploaded.

There are no settings to fiddle with, because there is only one job to do: take the sound out.

Why muting losslessly matters

Most online "mute video" tools quietly re-encode your file, which throws away picture quality and changes the codec, bitrate and file size — even though you only wanted to touch the audio. This tool does the opposite. It performs a stream copy: the video stream is copied byte-for-byte while the audio stream is dropped, with nothing re-encoded. Because the picture is never reprocessed, there is zero quality loss, the resolution and frame rate are identical, the container and codec are unchanged, and the job finishes almost instantly even on a long clip. The result is simply your original file minus its soundtrack.

Mute vs. extract audio vs. replace audio

Three jobs are easy to mix up. Muting keeps the video and discards the audio. Extracting keeps the audio as a downloadable file and leaves your original alone. Replacing swaps one soundtrack for another. This table shows which tool does which:

If you want to… Use What you get
Remove the sound and keep the picture Mute Video (this tool) The same video, now silent
Save the sound as its own file Extract Audio from Video An MP3 or WAV of just the audio
Swap in a new voice-over or music Add Audio to Video (coming soon) The video with new audio

If you mute a clip now and want to narrate it later, mute it here and then add your new track with the replace-audio tool once it lands.

Supported formats

Upload MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV or AVI. The silent video comes back in the same format you uploaded — mute an MP4 and you get an MP4, mute a MOV and you get a MOV. There is no forced conversion to a lowest-common-denominator format, so your file stays compatible with whatever editor or platform you are headed to next.

File size and length limits

Without an account you can mute videos up to 200 MB and 20 minutes. A free account raises that to 500 MB and 60 minutes. Because a stream copy is so light on the server, these caps are generous — they keep the shared tool responsive rather than reflecting any real cost of muting. One file is processed per run, and the whole audio track is removed (timed or partial muting may arrive as a future option).

Your files stay private

Your upload is processed securely and the muted copy is auto-deleted from our servers shortly after you download it. No account is required to mute a video, and we never share or reuse your media. See our privacy policy and terms for the full details.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I remove the audio from a video?

Upload your video above, click Mute Video, and download the silent copy. The tool strips the entire audio track and returns the same video — same format, same quality — with no software to install and no watermark.

Does muting reduce the video quality?

No. Muting is a lossless stream copy, not a re-encode: the video stream is copied byte-for-byte while only the audio is dropped. The resolution, frame rate, codec and picture quality are exactly the same as your original.

Will muting change my video's file format?

No. The silent video is returned in the same container you uploaded — mute an MP4 and you get an MP4 back, mute a MOV and you get a MOV. Nothing is converted, so the file stays compatible with your editor or upload destination.

What's the difference between muting and extracting audio?

Muting keeps the video and throws the sound away — you download a silent clip. Extracting keeps the audio: it saves the soundtrack as a separate MP3 or WAV file. If you want the audio as a file rather than gone, use the Extract Audio from Video tool instead.

Can I add new audio after muting?

Yes — that is a common workflow. Mute the clip here to get a clean silent picture, then lay in a fresh voice-over or licensed track. A dedicated tool to add or replace a soundtrack is coming soon; until then, mute first and bring your silent cut into your editor.

What's the maximum file size and length?

Without an account you can mute videos up to 200 MB and 20 minutes long. A free account raises the limits to 500 MB and 60 minutes. One video is processed per run.
