About Video Cropper

Crop a video to any rectangle

Sometimes you don't want a platform preset — you want to cut the exact edges off a video: drop a black border left by a screen recording, remove a letterbox, tighten a talking-head shot, isolate one person in a two-shot, or chop a slide deck down to just the slide. This free online video cropper does a freeform pixel crop: you set a rectangle in pixels — its width, height and the X/Y position of its top-left corner — and it trims the frame to exactly that box, then re-encodes a clean H.264 MP4 you can download. No watermark, no account, no app to install.

Crop vs resize vs aspect-ratio math

These three jobs sound similar but are different tools — pick the one that matches what you actually need:

Job What it does Reach for
Freeform crop (this tool) Cuts the frame to any pixel rectangle you choose Removing borders, reframing, isolating a region
Platform resize Re-frames to a fixed aspect like 9:16, 1:1 or 16:9 Posting to Reels, TikTok, Instagram or YouTube — the Social Video Resizer
Aspect-ratio math Calculates widths, heights and ratios only — never touches the video Planning dimensions — the Aspect Ratio Calculator

Crop keeps you in full control of the rectangle; the resizer locks you to a platform shape; the calculator never re-encodes anything. If you came here to "resize for Instagram," the resizer is the right tool — this one is for cutting an arbitrary region out of the frame.

How the crop box works

A crop is described by four numbers, width:height:x:y. Width and height are the size of the rectangle you keep; X and Y are the offset of its top-left corner from the top-left of the frame, measured in pixels. So on a 1920×1080 source, a box of 1280×720 at X=320, Y=180 keeps a 1280×720 window taken from the centre of the frame — 320 px in from the left and 180 px down from the top. Set X and Y to 0 to crop from the top-left corner. Leave the fields blank and the tool defaults to a centred rectangle at 50% of the original size. Any box that runs past an edge is automatically trimmed to fit inside the frame rather than failing.

Why width and height must be even

The output is H.264 video in the yuv420p pixel format — the combination that plays everywhere, from phones to browsers to editing apps. Because yuv420p stores colour at half resolution, it requires even pixel dimensions, so this tool rounds your width and height down to the nearest even number before cropping (for example, 641 becomes 640). That one detail is exactly why an odd-numbered crop fails in most command-line ffmpeg workflows — here it is handled for you automatically, so the export never errors out on a stray odd pixel.

Your audio is kept untouched

Cropping only changes the picture, so the audio is stream-copied — passed straight through without re-encoding. That means no quality loss on the sound and a faster export. A video with no audio simply comes back silent, with no error.

Limits and privacy

Without an account you can crop one file up to 100 MB and 5 minutes; a free account raises that to 200 MB and 10 minutes per file. The length cap keeps each crop fast, because the video is re-encoded while you wait. Your files are processed securely, never shared, and automatically deleted after processing — no account is required to use the tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I crop a video?

Upload your video, enter the crop box — the width and height of the rectangle you want to keep and the X/Y position of its top-left corner, all in pixels — then click Crop Video and download the new MP4. Leave the box blank to crop a centred rectangle at 50% of the original size.

How do I crop a video to a specific size?

Type the exact pixel dimensions into the Width and Height fields, and use X and Y to position the rectangle in the frame (0, 0 is the top-left corner). The output lands on exactly those dimensions — rounded down to the nearest even number, which H.264 requires — so a 1080×1080 box gives a 1080×1080 MP4.

Crop vs resize — what's the difference?

Cropping cuts a rectangle out of the frame, throwing away whatever falls outside the box, so the pixels you keep are unchanged. Resizing re-frames the whole video to a fixed aspect ratio such as 9:16 or 1:1, scaling and optionally letterboxing it. If you want a platform aspect, use the Social Video Resizer; if you want to cut any rectangle freehand, this is the tool.

Why must the width and height be even numbers?

The output is encoded as H.264 in the yuv420p pixel format, which stores colour at half resolution and therefore requires even width and height. The tool rounds your crop dimensions down to the nearest even number (for example 641 → 640) so the export always succeeds, instead of failing on an odd pixel the way a raw ffmpeg command would.

Does cropping reduce quality?

The cropped region is re-encoded once at CRF 23 — visually clean, with only the minor loss any single H.264 pass introduces — while the audio is copied across untouched, so the sound is bit-for-bit identical. Cropping itself removes pixels at the edges but does not soften the pixels you keep.

What's the maximum file size and length?

Without an account you can crop one file up to 100 MB and 5 minutes. A free account raises that to 200 MB and 10 minutes per file. The length cap keeps each crop fast, because the video is re-encoded while you wait.
